Six Degrees of Gaga

Lady Gaga seems to be everywhere. From her paper-eating appearance on Letterman to her Europride performance in Rome, Gaga has gone global. Many liken her to Madonna, comparing their musical styles and wardrobes. Recent events in the music and entertainment industry link Gaga and Madonna through a Kevin Bacon-esque circle I like to call “Six Degrees of Gaga”.

Lady Gaga

American Idol’s Season Finale featured Lady Gaga and a powerful performance of “Edge of Glory.” The 2011 Finale had a record-setting 28.2 million viewers, an increase of 17% over last year’s viewership. Gaga was already enjoying notoriety for the recent album release of “Born This Way”, which sold more than 1.11 million copies in a week, after Amazon offered a 99-cent digital-download flash sale deal.

Clarence Clemons

Gaga’s Idol Finale performance featured sax player Clarence Clemons, who spent years on stage with famed rocker, Bruce Springsteen. Clemons played on two songs from the “Born This Way” album. Just this week, Clemons suffered a stroke, and underwent brain surgery at a hospital in Florida. He later passed away Saturday, June 18.

Ryan Seacrest

Gaga and Clemon’s performance on Idol was one of many introduced by popular host, Ryan Seacrest. In addition to Seacrest’s ten seasons on Idol, he also hosts “American Top 40 with Ryan Seacrest” and “On-Air with Ryan Seacrest” – his nationally syndicated AM drive show on KIIS-FM. Seacrest’s production company, Ryan Seacrest Productions, is also responsible for bringing us popular shows such as “Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution”, “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” and “Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami”.

Kim Kardashian

Brought to life by Ryan Seacrest Productions, Kim Kardashian and family just launched season six of “Keeping up with the Kardashians” on June 12th  The season opener recorded a total of 2.5 million viewers, which was down significantly from the season five premiere, which touted 4.7 million viewers. Kim graced the stage in 2010 on “Dancing with the Stars”, but was voted off the show. She recently enlisted the help of former Dancing partner, Mark Ballas, to give Kim and her fiancée (Kris Humphries) ballroom dancing lessons.

Carson Daly

Carson Daly welcomed Kim Kardashian to the set of MTV’s TRL when she launched “Keeping up with the Kardashians”. Carson appears in late fringe on “Last Call with Carson Daly”, and recently began hosting NBC’s new hit show, “The Voice”, on Tuesday nights. “The Voice” features judges Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green, Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera, and beat out all other shows this past Tuesday night with a 4.5 rating/13 share against A18-49, and 12 million total viewers. This week’s show featured Christina’s four contestants against Blake’s crew. Results air next week at 9P.

Christina Aguilera

Much has been written lately about Christina Aguilera’s role on “The Voice”. She reportedly makes about $225K per episode, which is three times what each of the other three judges make per episode. She performed her famous “Lady Marmalade” with the female members of her team on June 8th.  Christina appeared on two “W Magazine” covers so far this year, but is perhaps most recently noted for botching the lyrics to the National Anthem during the 2011 Super Bowl.

Madonna

Christina Aguilera is the 2nd top-selling single artist of the 2000’s. Madonna is #1. Christina’s “Not Myself Tonight” video is said to be inspired by Madonna, but whenever people see Christina and Madonna’s names in a sentence, they reference the infamous VMA kiss in the opening act of “Like A Virgin.” Madonna’s Queen of Pop title still stands. Madonna was cited as the most successful solo artist (second overall, behind only The Beatles) on the “Billboard Hot 100 All-Time Top Artists” list. She even has her own IPhone app!

Lady Gaga

Madonna’s music and attire were revolutionary and ground-breaking, until recently, when Gaga burst onto the scene. When she arrived at this year’s Grammy’s in an oversized egg, people took note. Critics said “Born This Way” sounded similar to Madonna’s “Express Yourself”, and it was difficult to ignore the similarities between Gaga’s black breast plate and blonde ponytail and Madonna’s infamous cone bra.

It seems like the world has gone “goo-goo” for Gaga!
